Day by day

Your 2-day plan

  1. 1

    Day 1

Blue lanes by day & the Spanish Mosque sunset

Spend the afternoon working the most photogenic corners of the indigo medina — the stepped blue lanes off Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the potted-flower doorways near Rue Bin Souaqa and the 15th-century kasbah walls. As the light softens, make the roughly 20-minute uphill walk to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint to shoot golden hour and sunset over the blue rooftops and the Rif mountains beyond.

    • Stepped blue lanes
    • Painted doorways
    • Kasbah walls
    • Spanish Mosque sunset

    Day 2

Sunrise medina, Ras el-Maa & viewpoints

Be in the medina at first light, when the blue lanes are empty and softly lit — the best window of the whole trip for clean street frames. Work down to the Ras el-Maa waterfall and washing-stream at the medina's edge, then climb to a higher viewpoint such as the slopes below Jebel el-Kelaa for a wider shot of the whole blue town against the mountains before the day-trippers arrive.

    • Ras el-Maa stream
    • Town viewpoints
    • Empty-street frames

Good to know

Practical notes

  • Light is everything here: shoot the blue lanes at sunrise and just after, and save the Spanish Mosque for sunset — midday is harsh and the lanes fill with day-trip crowds.
  • The Spanish Mosque viewpoint is a roughly 20-minute uphill walk from the medina; bring water and go up about an hour before sunset.
  • Be respectful with people shots — ask before photographing residents, and some shopkeepers expect a small purchase if you photograph their doorway.
  • An overnight in the medina is essential for this trip: the sunrise and sunset windows only work if you're already in town.

Frequently asked

Is Chefchaouen good for photography?

Yes — the indigo-painted medina is one of Morocco's most photogenic places. The blue lanes, painted doorways, the Ras el-Maa stream and the Spanish Mosque viewpoint give a lot of variety in a small, walkable town. The light matters most: sunrise and the hour after for the lanes, and sunset from the Spanish Mosque for the rooftops.

When is the best time of day to photograph Chefchaouen?

Early morning. The blue lanes are quiet and softly lit before about 11:00, before the day-trip crowds arrive from Tangier and Fes. For the wider rooftop shots, the Spanish Mosque viewpoint at sunset is the classic frame.

Do I need a guide for a Chefchaouen photo trip?

Not strictly — the medina is small and safe to walk. But a local who knows the best lanes and the right hours can save time, help with respectful people photography, and get you to the viewpoints at the right moment.
