Why Essaouira
Essaouira (Mogador on old maps) is the easy Atlantic break of the south, three hours west of Marrakech. Blue-city travellers notice the kinship at once: like Chefchaouen its medina is small, walkable and washed in blue and white — but here the blue is sea-blue and the doors open onto a windward Atlantic rather than a Rif valley. Its 18th-century ramparts have featured in Game of Thrones, the windy beach is a year-round magnet for kite-surfers, and the road in passes the argan cooperatives. It is a long way from the indigo Rif, but the two blue medinas make a satisfying pair across a longer Morocco trip.
What to see
Portuguese-built cannon walls overlooking the Atlantic, used as the city of Astapor in Game of Thrones.
Pick fish off the morning's catch and have it grilled in front of you at the port stalls — Morocco's freshest seafood, no question.
Visit a women's co-op on the road in from Marrakech and see argan oil pressed by hand from the kernels.
Long empty beaches south, and an oyster-farming lagoon north.

Both are small, photogenic blue-and-white medinas, but the resemblance ends there. Chefchaouen is a cool mountain town deep in the Rif, painted in lime and indigo and ringed by forest hikes; Essaouira is a breezy Atlantic fortress port of seafood grills and kite-surf. They sit at opposite ends of the country and complement each other beautifully on a longer itinerary.
Yes, but it is windy and the Atlantic is cool year-round. For warmer, calmer water head south to Sidi Kaouki or on to Agadir.
