Why Agadir
Rebuilt after a 1960 earthquake, Agadir is Morocco's premier beach resort, on the southern Atlantic far from the Rif: a sweeping crescent of golden sand, a palm-lined promenade and over 300 days of sunshine a year. It is the opposite pole to Chefchaouen in every sense — sun and sea rather than mountains and indigo, modern resorts rather than a 15th-century medina. Travellers who want both usually treat the blue city as their northern chapter and Agadir as a warm-down on the southern coast, linked by the surf village of Taghazout just north and the palm-shaded pools of Paradise Valley in the Anti-Atlas behind.
What to see
A 10 km golden bay with calm swimming, beach clubs and one of Morocco's best seafront walks.
A bohemian surf village 20 minutes north — point breaks, yoga, argan-oil co-ops and sunset cafés.
Palm-fringed natural pools and waterfalls carved into the Anti-Atlas, an hour inland — the region's best half-day escape.
The hilltop ruins of the old fortress, rebuilt with a cable car and sweeping views over the bay and port.

If you want beach, sun and surf rather than old-city atmosphere, yes. Agadir is the country's best resort base, with reliable sunshine year-round and easy access to Taghazout and Paradise Valley. It is a sun-and-sea counterweight to a mountain town like Chefchaouen rather than a substitute for it.
Agadir is sunnier, warmer and more resort-oriented with a bigger beach; Essaouira is windier but far more atmospheric, with a historic blue-and-white medina and ramparts. Many travellers combine both along the southern coast as a contrast to the indigo north.
