Why Marrakech
Marrakech sits far to the south of Chefchaouen — roughly 580 km, a long day's drive or a short Casablanca-connecting flight from the Rif — yet most travellers who fall for the blue city pair it with the red one for contrast. Where Chaouen is a cool mountain town of indigo lanes, Marrakech is hot, ochre and theatrical: the UNESCO-listed medina, the Jemaa el-Fnaa square at dusk, the Koutoubia minaret, Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the cobalt-blue Majorelle garden that, fittingly for blue-city pilgrims, is the one splash of indigo in the south. Outside the walls the Palmeraie hides quiet riad hotels and the Agafay stone desert lies 40 minutes away.
What to see
The UNESCO square at dusk and the souks of Semmarine, Mouassine and the dyers' lane — a louder, busier maze than Chefchaouen's gentle blue alleys, and best approached with a licensed local guide.
19th-century palace courtyards, zellige tilework and the rediscovered Saadian necropolis behind the Kasbah mosque.
The cobalt-blue garden Yves Saint Laurent bought in 1980 — the south's answer to the blue medina — with the museum charting his Marrakech years.
A khaki moonscape 40 minutes from the city — camel rides, dune buggies and lantern-lit sunset dinners beneath the High Atlas.
An hour into the High Atlas: Berber villages, waterfalls and lunch beside the river — Marrakech's own mountain escape, as the Rif is Chaouen's.

Three full days cover the medina, the major monuments and one half-day excursion to the Agafay or Ourika. A fourth lets you add a slower riad morning or a hammam ritual.
Yes, but they sit at opposite ends of the country — about 580 km apart. The usual approach is to fly or take the high-speed train between Marrakech and Tangier, then drive the final 2 hours up into the Rif to the blue city. Allow a full travel day between the two.
March–May and September–November bring warm days (22–28°C) and cool evenings. June–August can top 40°C; December–February is mild by day but cold after dark — far hotter year-round than the mountain air of Chefchaouen.
