Why Ouarzazate & Aït Ben Haddou
On the far southern side of the Tizi n'Tichka pass — a world away from the blue Rif — Ouarzazate is the staging town for the Sahara, the Dadès and Drâa valleys and the kasbah road. Forty minutes away, Aït Ben Haddou is the most famous fortified village in Morocco: a UNESCO site and the backdrop of Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones, shot at the neighbouring Atlas Studios. This is deep-south Morocco; reaching it from Chefchaouen means a two-day journey back through Fes and over the High Atlas, so it usually belongs to the desert leg of a longer trip rather than a blue-city extension.
What to see
UNESCO-listed earthen fortified village. Climb to the granary at the top for the panoramic shot across the river.
Working sound stages and exterior sets from Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Cleopatra and more.
Crumbling 19th-century Glaoui palace on the old caravan route — far fewer tourists than Aït Ben Haddou.
Two days further east: cliff-side roads, walnut groves and one of the most dramatic canyon hikes in Morocco.

Yes — it is the most striking single site in southern Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage village. Most travellers see it for an hour; sunset or sunrise on the earthen towers is far better.
Only on a long itinerary. The ksar sits in the deep south beyond the High Atlas, roughly two days' travel from the blue city via Fes. The two make sense as separate chapters of a wider Morocco trip — the indigo Rif in the north, the kasbah road in the south — rather than a quick add-on.
