Sunset at the Spanish Mosque

Things to do · Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen is a small, quiet mountain town, and its evenings are gentle rather than lively: cafés around the main square, rooftop dinners, the blue lanes glowing under the lamps and a sky full of stars. There are no clubs and very little alcohol. Here is how to enjoy an evening in the blue city.

The main square, beside the red-walled Kasbah and the Great Mosque, is where the town gathers in the evening. Cafés and restaurants spill onto the square and stay open until late.
Many restaurants and guesthouses have terraces with mountain views. Try goat cheese from the Rif, bissara bean soup and slow-cooked tagines.
Lamplight turns the painted walls deep blue, and with the day-trippers gone the lanes are calm. Early evening is ideal for photography; the medina is very quiet later at night.
The spring and stream on the edge of the medina is a cool, pleasant place for an evening walk, with local families sitting by the water in summer.
Away from big-city light, the night sky over the Rif can be spectacular. A rooftop or the path towards the Spanish Mosque is a good spot on a clear night.
Evenings in Chefchaouen are made for slow tea in a café or your guesthouse courtyard. It is one of the most relaxed towns in Morocco.
Very little. Chefchaouen is a quiet, conservative town with no clubs and almost no bars; a few hotels serve alcohol. Evenings centre on cafés, rooftop dinners and the main square.
Chefchaouen is generally calm and safe in the evening. The lanes are steep and some are poorly lit, so take care on the steps and use a torch on the path to the Spanish Mosque.
Most restaurants around Plaza Uta el-Hammam stay open through the evening; the rest of the town becomes very quiet after about 10pm.
Yes. Staying the night lets you see the town at sunset and in the calm of the early morning, after the day-trippers have left.
