Overview

A guided full-day hike from Chefchaouen into the Talassemtane National Park to the Akchour waterfalls — turquoise pools, a riverside trail and a swim stop in the Rif mountains.

Akchour is the green secret of the Rif: a deep wooded valley about 30 minutes north-east of Chefchaouen where the Oued Kelaa river drops over a series of cascades into pools the colour of jade. The trail follows the river upstream beneath oak and pine, crossing makeshift bridges and passing riverside cafés where you can stop for a mint tea or a tagine cooked over coals.

We drive you to the Akchour trailhead, then hike with a local guide to the Grande Cascade — the big waterfall — about two hours each way over rocky but rewarding terrain. In summer there's time for a swim in the pools beneath the falls. This is the best way to see the Talassemtane National Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve and one of the last refuges of the Moroccan fir.

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

Is "Akchour Waterfalls Hike" private or a group tour?

100% private. Just you and the people you book with — your own driver-guide, vehicle and pace from start to finish. We never pool travellers.

Can I change the dates or itinerary?

Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point. Add the Akchour hike, swap a riad, change the start city — we'll re-quote in 24 hours and lock the price in writing before any deposit.

How fit do I need to be?

Easy. Light walking on the blue medina's cobbled lanes, plus optional viewpoint climbs you can opt in or out of on the day.

When should I book a Chefchaouen tour?

For spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Oct), and any trip combining Tangier or Fes, book 4–8 weeks ahead. Last-minute (under 14 days) is usually still possible with a phone call.

How hard is the Akchour waterfalls hike?

Moderate. It's about two hours each way to the Grande Cascade on a rocky riverside path with some scrambling and small bridges — manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness and good shoes. The shorter God's Bridge route is easier if you prefer.

Can you swim at the Akchour waterfalls?

Yes, in summer the pools beneath the cascades are popular for swimming — bring a swimsuit and towel. In spring the water is cold and high; we focus on the hike and the views instead.
