Why Atlas Mountains

The High Atlas rises straight out of the Marrakech plain in the south. Within 60 minutes of leaving the city you can be in Imlil at 1,740 m, surrounded by Berber villages, walnut and cherry orchards, and trails that climb to Jbel Toubkal — the highest mountain in North Africa at 4,167 m. Hikers who fall for the gentle Rif trails around Chefchaouen find a bigger, higher cousin here: where Talassemtane offers waterfalls and forest walks at 500–1,000 m, the High Atlas delivers serious 4,000 m peaks. It works as a day trip, a weekend at a mountain lodge, or a 2–3 day trek with guides and mules.

Base village for trekkers; lunch at Kasbah du Toubkal, walk to Aroumd or up to Sidi Chamharouch.

FAQ

Atlas Mountainscommon questions.

Can you climb Toubkal without a guide?+

No — since 2018 a licensed mountain guide is mandatory for the summit. Ascents are led by certified local guides familiar with the route and conditions.

How do the High Atlas compare to hiking around Chefchaouen?+

Very differently. The Rif trails near the blue city — Akchour, Talassemtane — are low-altitude forest-and-waterfall walks, gentle and green. The High Atlas is a true alpine range topping 4,000 m, with snow into spring and a serious summit in Toubkal. Keen walkers often do both: the Rif for an easy day, the Atlas for a multi-day trek.

Is the Atlas worth visiting if I don't trek?+

Absolutely — Asni, Ouirgane and Ourika all offer comfortable lodge stays with short, easy walks, much like an unhurried day in the Rif foothills around Chaouen.
