The essentials

These earn their place in any Chefchaouen bag, in any season.

  • Grippy, broken-in walking shoes — the blue medina is steep, cobbled and often slick after rain.
  • Breathable layers and one genuinely warm layer; Rif evenings cool quickly even after a warm day.
  • A light waterproof or packable rain jacket — mountain showers roll in fast, especially autumn to spring.
  • Modest cover-up — shoulders and knees covered for the conservative medina and the town's mosques.
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and SPF 30+; a scarf doubles as sun, dust and modesty cover.
  • A reusable water bottle, a small day-pack for Akchour, and a Type C/E plug adaptor (220V).

By trip type

For Akchour and the God's Bridge hike, bring trail shoes or boots with real grip, a refillable water bottle, sun protection and a swimsuit if you want to cool off in the rock pools. For longer Talassemtane treks, add hiking poles, a fleece and a windproof layer — the Rif ridgelines are exposed. For day trips onward to Tangier or Tetouan, pack a windproof layer for the coast.

What to leave behind

You don't need to over-pack toiletries or fine jewellery. Chefchaouen's little shops sell wool blankets, woven goods, local goat's cheese and natural soaps, and flashy valuables only draw attention. Leave room in your bag — the blue-city handicrafts are hard to resist.

Frequently asked

What should women wear in Chefchaouen?

Loose, breathable clothing that covers shoulders and knees suits this conservative mountain town and is comfortable for the steep lanes. You don't need to cover your hair. A scarf is the most versatile item you can pack — sun, chill and modesty in one.

Do I need warm clothes for Chefchaouen?

Yes, especially outside high summer. At around 600 metres in the Rif, evenings cool noticeably and autumn-to-spring brings cold, rainy spells — a warm layer and a packable waterproof make the blue lanes far more enjoyable.

What power adaptor does Morocco use?

Morocco uses the European two-pin Type C/E plugs at 220V. Bring a European adaptor; most phone and laptop chargers handle the voltage automatically.
