Why Rabat
Rabat is Morocco's political capital and one of its most relaxed cities — a UNESCO-listed blend of Almohad ramparts, French-era avenues and Atlantic light, and a natural stop on the Al Boraq high-speed line between Casablanca and Tangier on the way north to the blue city. Blue-city travellers will recognise the kasbah of the Udayas at once: its lanes are washed blue and white above the Bou Regreg river mouth, a coastal echo of the indigo Rif medina. The unfinished Hassan Tower and the marble Mausoleum of Mohammed V anchor the skyline, and the medina is gentle, walkable and refreshingly hassle-free after Fes or Marrakech.
What to see
A 12th-century fortified quarter of blue-and-white lanes above the river — the capital's own slice of indigo, with an Andalusian garden and a café overlooking the Atlantic.
The minaret of a mosque never finished, facing the exquisitely decorated royal mausoleum guarded by mounted sentries.
Roman and Merinid ruins reclaimed by storks and gardens — one of the most atmospheric sites in the country.
A low-key medina for carpets and crafts, plus the art-deco and modernist avenues of the French protectorate.

Yes, especially as an easy, hassle-free stop on the route north to the blue city. Its UNESCO monuments, the blue-and-white kasbah of the Udayas and the Chellah ruins make a rewarding day, and it is far calmer than Marrakech or Fes.
It shares the blue-and-white palette — lime-washed walls and indigo trim that recall the Rif's blue city in miniature — but it is a single compact quarter above the Atlantic rather than a whole mountain medina. It makes a pleasant taste of Moroccan blue for travellers passing through Rabat on the way up to Chaouen.
