Questions

  1. Where is Chefchaouen?

Chefchaouen is a small town in the Rif mountains of northern Morocco. It sits at about 564 m, roughly 113 km south of Tangier and 200 km north of Fes. It was founded in 1471 as a fort against Portuguese raids. Muslim and Jewish refugees from Spain later settled there.

  2. Is Chefchaouen safe for tourists?

For most visitors, yes. Chefchaouen is one of Morocco's calmer towns. It is small, easy to walk and used to travellers, and violent crime against tourists is rare. Watch for petty theft, overcharging, fake guides, steep slippery steps and cannabis offers. Normal city care is enough for most people.

  3. Is Chefchaouen safe for solo female travellers?

Many women travel to Chefchaouen alone. Most find it calmer than Morocco's big cities, with less pushy attention. Some comments or staring can still happen. The usual advice: cover shoulders and knees, keep to the busier lanes after dark, and walk on from anyone who keeps following you.

  4. What should I do if I'm offered hashish in Chefchaouen?

Say no politely and keep walking. The Rif is known for growing cannabis, so you may be offered kif or hashish in the medina or on the Akchour trail. Recreational cannabis is illegal in Morocco, and buying or carrying it is a real legal risk. A friendly, firm “no, thank you” works.

  5. How many days do you need in Chefchaouen?

One night and two days suits most travellers. The blue medina is small, but staying the night gives you the Spanish Mosque sunset and the lanes almost empty in the early morning, before the day-trippers arrive. Add a third day only if you want to hike to Akchour or God's Bridge, or slow right down.

  6. Can you visit Chefchaouen as a day trip?

Yes. The medina is compact, so a few relaxed hours cover the main blue lanes, Outa el Hammam square, the kasbah and Ras el Ma. A day trip works best from Tangier or Tetouan, about 2 hours or less away. From Fes, about 4 hours each way, staying overnight is the better use of the drive.

  7. When is the best time to visit Chefchaouen?

April to June and September to October. The hills are green or turning gold, days are mild, broadly the high teens to mid twenties Celsius, and the medina is calmer than in August. Winters (December to February) are cold and wet with occasional frost. Summer is warm and busy, so walk early and late.

  17. What is the Jewish history of Chefchaouen?

Jews expelled from Spain after 1492 settled in Chefchaouen, a town founded only 21 years earlier, and lived in its mellah, the Jewish quarter. One popular account says they brought the blue paint, but no one has proved it. The community has since left.

  18. How far is Akchour from Chefchaouen?

About 33 km by road, roughly 45 to 55 minutes each way, with a winding mountain road for the last stretch. Akchour is the trailhead for the waterfalls and God's Bridge in Talassemtane National Park. The walk to the main waterfall is then about two hours each way beside the river.

  19. Can you hike to the Akchour waterfalls without a guide?

Yes, the main path is well used, and the hike is moderate: rock and gravel beside the river, stepping-stone crossings, short scrambles. The upper falls are further and steeper than people expect and phone signal is patchy. A local guide helps with river crossings and knows which pools are safe that day.

  20. Can you swim at the Akchour waterfalls?

Yes, in summer. From June to September the pools under the falls are popular for swimming. In spring the water is high and very cold, so most people just look. The falls are fullest roughly March to May. Conditions change week to week, so check on the day what is safe.

  21. Where is the best sunset view in Chefchaouen?

The Spanish Mosque, a small white mosque on the hill opposite the medina. It is an easy climb of about 20 minutes from the old town, and at sunset the whole blue city lies below you. Take a light for the walk back down after dark.

  22. Why is Chefchaouen blue?

Nobody knows for sure, and people tell several stories. Some credit the town's Jewish community, and some the settlers from Spain. Others say blue keeps insects away or rooms cool. Some say it grew as a habit that visitors came to love. What is certain: people here still repaint with lime-based blue.
