Why Tangier
Tangier is the gateway most blue-city travellers arrive through. It sits where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, with Spain visible across the strait on a clear day, and its airport (TNG) is the nearest to Chefchaouen — 113 km and about 2 hours of Rif road to the south. Long an international city, administered jointly by foreign powers from 1923 to 1956, it drew Matisse, Paul Bowles, William Burroughs and the Rolling Stones. Today it is the polished modern threshold to the north: a 35-minute ferry from Tarifa, a 2-hour drive up to the indigo lanes of Chaouen, and a 4-hour drive (or 2-hour high-speed train) to Fes.

For most visitors, yes. Tangier has the nearest airport and ferry port to the blue city, and the 113 km drive south through the Rif takes about 2 hours. A classic northern loop runs Tangier to Chefchaouen to Fes, taking in the strait, the indigo medina and the imperial city in turn.
Two nights is the sweet spot — one day for the kasbah and medina, one for Cap Spartel and a long lunch — before continuing up to Chefchaouen.
